Primeros registros de cachalotes, Physeter macrocephalus y Kogia sima, en aguas caribeñas de la República Dominicana

Abstract

[Español] Éste es el primer registro del cachalote (Physeter macrocephalus) y del cachalote enano (Kogia sima) para el área de Bayahíbe en República Dominicana. Se efectuaron 10 salidas al mar, con un esfuerzo de 49.92 horas; en 3 de éstas se tuvieron avistamientos de 82 organismos. Las especies observadas fueron: Tursiops truncatus, Physeter macrocephalus y Kogia sima; se registraron en profundidades de 400 a 1 400 m, en un fondo arenoso/rocoso y a temperaturas superficiales del agua de 29° a 31° C.

[English] This is the first report of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and dwarf sperm whale (Kogia sima) for the Bayahíbe area in the Dominican Republic. A total of 10 boat based surveys were carried out, totaling 49.92 hr of survey effort. Cetaceans were observed in 3 out of 10 surveys, totalling 82 organisms sighted. The observed species were: Tursiops truncatus, Physeter macrocephalus and Kogia sima; recorded at depths of 400 to 1 400 m, over sandy/ rocky bottoms, and a sea surface temperature of 29° to 31° C.
