The magnitude and direction of incoming waves significantly influence the sediment movement along the coastline. In the Caribbean context, hurricanes and tropical storms stand out as major agents influencing beach dynamics, with their exceptional sediment-transporting capabilities. The focus of this study is the particular morphodynamic evolution of the Sosúa coastline, situated in the northern region of the Dominican Republic. Here, the beaches are primarily shaped by the impact of hurricanes and extreme events, leading to the relocation of sediments and the creation and disappearance of sandbanks. The study highlights that wave and current dynamics are primarily governed by the spatial distribution and structure of offshore coral reefs, underscoring the critical role of coral systems in coastal defense in the region. The research addresses the pressing need to analyze the dynamic interactions between natural and anthropogenic factors influencing beach stability along the west coast of Sosúa. With coastal areas increasingly threatened by climate change and human activities, this research aims to provide insights into the mechanisms driving sand movement and coastal protection, thereby aiding in the development of sustainable management strategies. |
