Abstract

This chapter provides a detailed account of Hispaniola’s forest ecosystems, highlighting their ecological diversity, current state, and the severe deforestation affecting both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It describes major vegetation types, forest management efforts, biodiversity richness, and conservation challenges. Despite existing protected areas and legal frameworks, forest degradation continues due to insufficient enforcement, political instability, and socioeconomic pressures, especially in Haiti.
