SinopsisHighlights: Mangrove forests are essential for coastal ecology and the main blue‑carbon ecosystems. -- The Caribbean mangroves (CM) originated 50 my ago and diversified in the last 5 my. -- At current deforestation rates, the CM may disappear in a few centuries. -- Current conservation measures are insufficient to guarantee the continuity of CM. -- Paleoecological and evolutionary knowledge can inform CM conservation/restoration.es
