Primer reporte de ingesta de plástico y presencia de nematodos en individuos de iguana verde en la isla de Santo Domingo

Abstract

[Español] El consumo de plástico se reporta cada vez con mayor frecuencia en reptiles acuáticos y terrestres. No siempre es fatal, pero indudablemente afecta la calidad de vida de los animales en formas que aún no son del todo claras. Durante jornadas de control de iguanas verdes (Iguana iguana) en la República Dominicana, se registraron dos individuos con fundas plásticas en el tracto gastrointestinal. La necropsia también reveló la presencia de nematodos aún no identificados. Este es el primer reporte, tanto de consumo de plásticos como de presencia de nematodos, en individuos de iguana verde de la isla de Santo Domingo.

[English] Plastic consumption is reported with increasing frequency in aquatic and terrestrial reptiles. It is not always fatal, but it undoubtedly affects the animals' quality of life in ways that are not yet entirely clear. During control campaigns of green iguanas (Iguana iguana) in the Dominican Republic, two individuals with plastic bags in the gastrointestinal tract were recorded. The necropsy also revealed the presence of nematodes not yet identified. This is the first report of both plastic consumption and the presence of nematodes in green iguana individuals on the island of Santo Domingo.
