SinopsisCaribbean Endemic Bird Festival (CEBF) day 67 poster, dedicated to the Vervain Hummingbird. Was that an insect buzzing past me just now? No, it’s the Vervain hummingbird (Mellisuga minima), the second smallest bird in the world! This tiny bird, just 5 cm long and weighing just over 2 grams, is endemic to Jamaica and Hispaniola and common and widespread on both islands. Both sexes have metallic green upperparts, pale underparts and a short, straight, black bill. Males are slightly smaller than females, have green spotting on the sides of their breast, and a dark slightly-forked tail. Females have a rounded tail with broadly-tipped white on the outer three tail feathers. Juveniles resemble the adult female but with smaller white tail tips. As a complement to the poster, a coloring sheet is included.es
